John 3:31-4:3
Questions
- This passage tells us some remarkable things about the Trinity (one God, three persons: Father, Son and the Holy Spirit). What do we find out about Jesus’ relationship with the Father and the Holy Spirit? Try drawing a diagram of this.
- Verse 36 says that God’s wrath will remain on those who reject the Son. What is the significance of this word?
Prayer Suggestions
- Praise God that he is one God and three persons. Although there will always be aspects of the Trinity that mystifies us, God has revealed a lot about himself through these verses.
- Pray for the married folks at church, that their marriages may be strong and reflect Jesus with his church, and also the unity and fellowship of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit.
TUE, 18th February
John 4:4-27
Information
SAMARITANS — A group of people related to God’s original chosen people: the Israelites (or Jews). However, the two groups became separated and disliked each other. The Jews didn’t accept the Samaritans because they had intermarried with other people groups. They also disagreed with the Samaritans over where they should worship God. Some even used the term as an insult against Jesus (John 8:48)!
Questions
- List out all the reasons why the disciples would be surprised at Jesus speaking with the Samaritan woman in verse 27. What does this tell us about Jesus?
- What is this “living water” that Jesus mentioned? Read John 7:37-39 to find out more.
- Jesus stated that the living water will always be enough, and that it will lead to eternal life (v13-14). How have you experienced this in your life?
Prayer Suggestions
- Give thanks for the Holy Spirit’s care and work in your life.
- Pray to become more sensitive to the Spirit’s leading and ask boldly to be filled by the Spirit and be given contentment, joy, peace and love in your life.
WED, 19th February
John 4:28-42
Questions
- Why would Jesus describe doing God’s will as “eating food”?
- Is there anything from this story that particularly speaks to you?
Prayer Suggestions
- Repent of the fact that we often think of doing God’s will as something that is burdensome when it is actually a joy and privilege to do so.
- Pray for non-Christian family and friends to realise that Jesus really is the Saviour of the world (v42). Pray for opportunities to speak about him to others like Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman.
THU, 20th February
John 4:43-54
Questions
- Today’s passage shows the second sign that Jesus performed. So how did this sign reveal the glory of Jesus?
Prayer Suggestions
- Praise Jesus that he is compassionate and has the authority to heal.
- Pray for brothers and sisters you know who are waiting on God to bring healing or relief to their pain. Pray for them to keep trusting God despite difficult situations.
FRI, 21st February
John 5:1-15
Information
SABBATH — Patterned after the creation week (Genesis 1), God commanded his people to work for six days and to rest on the seventh day (or the Sabbath day). The Jewish leaders then developed many rules and traditions surrounding the Sabbath, such as how far they’re allowed to walk, or what they could carry around without counting it as “work” and breaking the Sabbath.
Questions
- What did this third sign reveal about Jesus? Don’t forget to update your JESUS mind map!
- Why were the Jewish leaders upset?
Prayer Suggestions
- Repent for the times that we may behave like the Jewish leaders who were more offended at rules being broken than whether or not people were able to meet Jesus and be healed.
- Pray for your ministry leader, that they may grow in the love and knowledge of the Lord and be given wisdom to lead their ministries in ways that please God.
SAT, 22nd February
John 5:16-27
Questions
- How did Jesus respond to the accusation of the Jewish leaders that he had broken the Sabbath (because he healed people)?
- How did the religious leaders react to his response? Why?
- What did Jesus teach about his relationship with the Father?
Prayer Suggestions
- Give thanks that Jesus can give life to whomever he pleases and that he is the judge over the living and the dead.
- Acknowledge that Jesus (as the Son of God) is equal to God. Yield your life to him, and humble yourself before him.
- Pray along to this Puritan prayer: “Humility in Service”.
