Exodus 30:11-16

Please watch this helpful video on sacrifice and atonement:

Questions

  1. Why was it that the Israelites needed to pay a ransom at the time of census? What would be the outcome of paying this ransom?
  2. What was the atonement money used for?
  3. The rich and the poor paid the same amount of ransom. What does this show us about the value of everyone’s life?

Prayer Suggestions

  1. Give thanks that through Jesus, the final payment of atonement was made for our lives.
  2. Pray that the offerings we give would be used for the church, and that the finances within our church would be stewarded with wisdom.
  3. Seeker Monday: take a moment to think of a new non-believer for this month. Pray for them that God would reveal himself to them.

TUE, 4th August

Exodus 30:17-21

Questions

  1. Who were to wash themselves using the bronze basin?
  2. Why would they die if they did not wash their hands and feet?
  3. Even though we are filthy in our sin, who is it that has cleansed us? Think on the similarities between the function of the basin and the washing that Jesus does.

Prayer Suggestions

  1. Take some time to recognise the sin (dirt) in your life. Read 1 John 1:7-9 and Hebrews 9:22. Pray for cleansing through the blood of Jesus over your life.
  2. Thank God for the grace that he pours upon us as Jesus cleanses us over and over again something we have not earned or deserved.
  3. Pray that we would be able to serve the Lord with clean hands and pure hearts.

WED, 5th August

Exodus 30:22-33

Questions

  1. What was the purpose of the anointing oil? What and who was it used for?
  2. Take a moment to read about anointing and note down interesting or new things you’ve learned from the article: “What Is Anointing?”.
  3. The oil was to be used for the priests to set them apart. It was to recognise a special call on one’s life to serve God. Through Jesus, however, all believers are now given this special calling we are all anointed (1 Peter 2:9-10). What does this mean to you? How would life look different knowing that we are called into the priesthood?

Prayer Suggestions

  1. God calls us to a holy and royal priesthood; his anointing oil is for you. Pray that you would accept this calling to be used by God, and that he would anoint you today.
  2. Leadership Wednesday: among the believers, God sets aside leaders with different gifts and talents to lead and guide his people. Take a moment to recognise some leaders and potential leaders that are called. Pray that God would encourage them.

THU, 6th August

Exodus 30:34-38

Questions

  1. What was the purpose of the incense?
  2. God specifically said that anyone who made something even close to this incense should be cut off from their people. God also mentioned previously that he is a jealous God. Why does God hate counterfeits so much?
  3. Are there counterfeit gods in your life? Take a moment to reflect on whether there are acts of worship that you conduct that aren’t directed toward our God.

Prayer Suggestions

  1. Pray that God would reveal counterfeit gods in your life and that he would help you to turn away from following them.
  2. Just like the aroma of the incense, pray that your life would be full of the fragrance of God, and that whoever you meet would be able to experience God’s love and grace.

FRI, 7th August

Exodus 31:1-11

Questions

  1. For what purpose did God set aside two craftsmen? What did God give them? What about the other skilled workers? What does this teach us about God?
  2. How has God equipped you for his service? What are some skills and gifts that God has given to you? Are you honouring God with the way you use them?
  3. The Bible teaches us to earnestly pursue love and desire spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 14:1). Have you prayed to God to give you more spiritual gifts?

Prayer Suggestions

  1. Be bold and courageous and ask God for spiritual gifts today, for his glory.
  2. Take a moment to give thanks that God has equipped us to do his works.
  3. Mission Friday: ask God to continue to equip you not just so that you’re able to improve, but do so in hope that you may be more effective in reaching the lost.

SAT, 8th August

Exodus 31:12-18

Questions

  1. God was (and always has been) serious about resting on the Sabbath. What was the punishment for the Israelites who did not keep the Sabbath?
  2. Why is it so difficult for people to keep the Sabbath? Do you struggle to rest for the Lord?
  3. What can you do in your life now to cultivate a healthy fear of the Lord, and to also take steps in trusting him more?

Prayer Suggestions

  1. Take a moment to breath; let this moment be one of rest and of the Sabbath. Give honour and glory to God for providing and sustaining you thus far.
  2. Pray that you would take the Sabbath seriously, not just for the sake of resting your body and mind, but resting your soul. Pray that God would rejuvenate you through this time.
  3. Ask God to help you take greater steps of faith in areas where you need to trust him more.
